So I met with Dr. F on Monday. If you don't count my dentist or Dr. Biopsy, this is the fourth doctor to have his hands on me in the last few months. He seemed open to me asking the question that has been on my mind for a while, so I asked how you can transplant a piece of skin into a dark, warm, moist environment without it rotting (see trenchfoot). He laughed and said they weren't entirely sure how it all works. Gotta love his honesty. And man, he really enjoys his job, which is a good thing.
It just seemed that he was really into it, and wasn't at all bashful about the parts they don't understand. Apparently the skin grows up and around the implants that he is going to put in, though at different rates on different people and they have no idea why. Though apparently thinner skin responds better, so they are going to take one, really really thin slice for a skin graft when they put them in.
He also said that he and Dr. S (the guy who set the bone) and Dr. C (the guy who is specifying and building the dental device that they will be mounting to the implants) that all three of them do a virtual walkthrough of the surgery in advance to confirm that everything is right. Dr. S is also a dentist so when he put the bone in there, he did it with a mind toward this ultimate goal and knew how to do that. Apparently not all doctors who do this procedure as well versed as he is. Dr. F said that is why working with Dr. S makes his job easy. Hopefully none of the existing screws will be in the way of where the implants will go...
Going in again to see Dr. C to fix the bite on Thursday. He's going to do just a little grinding down of that one remaining tooth on the right. So hopefully after that I will be able to chew on the side where I still have teeth!
