plastic

Well, it didn't take too long to get to this point....I promise I will try to not be too negative too often, or at least try to have something constructive to add...

I was behind a woman in the supermarket tonight and watched in silent horror as she put half gallon jugs of juice (nice strong container, good for re-using!) into the super-cheap plastic grocery bags that can barely support their own weight much less anything of substance. None the less, everything has to go into a plastic bag, whether it needs it or not...

Also in this same vein is the person who while shopping for produce, puts the bananas into one of those plastic produce bags. My mind reels...

Ok, so here comes the positive side (only a tad self-righteous, but still a devout Utilitarian): the reason canvas bags are so much better is because...wait for it...they simply work better! They don't tear, they hold more so they require less hands, the handles don't stretch and then break, and on and on. I have used the large blue canvas bag from my wife's company to carry a desktop computer back and forth to work on the train. Can't put *that* into a plastic bag. It's even better than putting it onto one of those little airport carts, or whatever you call them, that the geeks always have.

So if you don't have them already, do yourself a favor and get a couple of strong canvas (or nylon, or hemp, or...) bags. Just don't put the bananas at the bottom.
